Steve and Amanda Schummer are no strangers to the world of franchising.

The Schummers owned three franchises in Maryland — a Subway, a Pretzeltime and a Mrs. Field’s Cookies — before moving to Florida two years ago.

In 2008, the Port Orange residents opened the Daily Grind Coffee House and Café in the Shoppes at Beville in Daytona Beach and recently bought the Dairy Queen franchise here on Ridgewood Avenue.

Amanda Schummer, 40, said they were actively looking for other franchises to buy when the Dairy Queen came on the market.

After researching the chain, best known for frozen treats, they liked what they found. “Dairy Queen has been around for a while and they give a lot of support to their franchisees,” she said in a recent interview.

Florida is among the states on a corporate “hot spot” list where Dairy Queen is very interested in expanding its footprint. The chain had been considering opening a store in Daytona Beach Shores, but that has been put on hold because of the recession. A DQ spokesman could not provide further information.

Amanda Schummer said the Shores location would have been owned by someone else. Still, she hopes to open other locations. “We would love to develop more,” she said, adding the decision rests with Dairy Queen and which of the chain’s concepts will work well at sites they are considering.
