Opening New Doors To Income

thestar.com:

With the unemployment rate climbing, more people are turning to home-based, direct-selling businesses as a way to make money.

“Quite a few people I’ve taken on have come on board because of the economy. Either because their husband has lost his position or their hours are being cut back,” says Sarah Smith, a consultant and director for Pampered Chef, which sells kitchen products.

In recent months, Pampered Chef has seen a 19 per cent increase in consultants joining the company.

“Direct selling is an interesting phenomenon. The industry is resilient, it’s not immune (to the economic downturn), but it’s resilient,” says Janice Gerol, vice-president and general manager of Pampered Chef Canada.

Gerol says the success of the Pampered Chef could be attributed to their consultants travelling to their customer’s homes to do a demonstration show. About eight to 12 people usually attend the demonstration and the consultant can earn 20 to 27 per cent commission on all sales. Directors can earn as much as 31 per cent.

“We don’t rely on people coming to us. We go to the people and it makes a huge difference,” Gerol says.
