Woman Gets A Handle On Business With B’s

Wicked Local:

Amy McHugh, design director for B’s Purses in Massachusetts, said a full-time job in an office would be a tough sell, as much of her income would go towards paying for child care for her two children. She chose this company because they were locally-based and new in the area. McHugh has worked with B’s Purses since 2005.

“These are the times when I’m busiest,” McHugh said, referring to the holiday season.

McHugh designs custom handbags, wallets and purses for her customers, going to their homes to help them pick out the perfect pattern. Many of her customers will organize parties where they can all get together and design their own products. She’s seeing many more people go the home business route, especially among mothers.

“I think it’s a trend that I’ve seen for a few years,” McHugh said. “Many of the girls and women trying to make ends meet and incorporate their kids and family lives.”

Along with the home visits and design parties, McHugh hosts gatherings at the Melting Pot in Bedford twice a month. Her husband works full-time, and she said any income she can bring in helps the family.

“Being able to attend your child’s play at school, read a book at library time, it makes it much more worth it,” McHugh said.
