Nancy Mah appraises two chunky silver bracelets on a recent November evening. She’s looking for Christmas gifts for her sisters, maybe something for herself.
“I love silver jewelry,” the 52-year-old Calgarian confesses before drinking from a glass of chilled lemonade. Nearby, other women sip red wine while taking in the wares – sterling silver bracelets, necklaces and rings; pretty yet earthy accessories, some embellished with turquoise, coral or pearls.
Mah is not at the mall or in a trendy boutique. Instead, she’s bending over the dining room table in her friend Debra Cummings’ Calgary house. A Silpada jewelry home party, thrown for an eclectic group of women, is just getting underway.
Ranging in age from mid-20s to mid-50s, the women gathered here are Cummings’ friends, neighbours, fellow book clubbers, former co-workers and even a spattering of hockey moms.
They’ve come together for an evening of cocktails, fig and goat cheese crostinis, and conversation, topped off with, perhaps, a little bit of shopping.
