10 Bizs You Can Start With Little Capital
A recent study by the SBA found that when unemployment is high, the number of sole proprietorships goes up. Some people who are laid off from their jobs decide to start small businesses.
If you find yourself in such circumstances — out of a job and thinking about starting a business — chances are you won’t have much money to start up with.
So Business.gov put together 10 businesses with potential for growth in 2010 that require little startup capital.
1. Consulting for your former employer or in your old industry
2. Web businesses
3. Virtual assistant
4. Online social media consulting; online content production
5. Convenience services for consumers
6. Pet businesses
7. Kids products or services
8. Mobile apps development and mobile consulting
9. Specialty foods
10. Landscaping and handyman services

It’s an interesting list, but I can’t agree that all of these businesses require little startup capital if you want to be successful. The list must assume you own the tools and equipment you will need, that you have a ready client list and that your marketing costs will be limited. You can start these businesses on a shoestring, but it is tough going. And don’t forget to budget living expenses while you’re waiting for your business to take off!

As far as the old adage goes, “You need money to make money” is true in both the brick and motar world and on the Internet, that is if you are looking to make money selling E-Commerce products, or most other startups that already exist, then you do need some liquid capital in order for your Biz to have a successful launch.
But nowadays, many young entrepreneurs have emerged coming up with unique idea’s that turned them into instant multi-millionaires almost overnight with minimal investment! Usually composing of only web-hosting fees and thats it.
It takes just one great idea to succeed on the medium of the Internet.
Make it a habit to think outside of the box now!

Ed, I wrote the original list. You are right that I “assume you own the tools and equipment you will need” and so stated in the original.
We all want to start businesses with NO money, but the reality is, you need to start with some tools/equipment and some amount of money for every business I know of. It’s just a question of how much.
For instance, you must start with a computer and Internet connection and some basic software, for a Web business. And you’ll have to invest over and above that.
For a landscaper business, you might start with your own truck, a lawnmower and some other tools.
But if you already have those things, your out-of-pocket expense can be limited.
And compared with other businesses, like buying a franchise or starting a manufacturing company or starting a biotech business, your upfront costs are much much lower for these businesses. And they all have the potential to generate a return almost immediately — unlike a biotech business which could take years.
It’s all relative. :)
