Small Business or Potential Business?

A reader wrote:
Dear Dane:
A proposal: let’s change the name from “Small Business” to “Potential Business”.
Let’s redefine it as the seed of an enterprise that will become a business no matter its size.
By business understanding a unit which produces profits by delivering a product.
An enterprise could be or not a business, but it could be a Potential Business or not.
From certain point of view, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson had an enterprise. It became a business later.(Getting it broke has been a full time job from other politicians by getting it into debt by paying “a fee” for producing every dollar to the Fed, but that is another matter.)
In other words, there are no small businesses just potential businesses.
This way the focus on small will be set on potential.
Cheers,
Polo Maldonado-Martinez.
PS: You may use this idea freely.
Excellent idea Polo!

i love your philosophy. for many years i did not make a lot of money but always was able to see down the road . most of my friends who are in business and making a lot of money think i am a little nuts.
even one of my instructors said any business not making a profit is a hobby and not a business. needless to say i felt inferior at that time and would have loved to show the teacher your article.
without potential down the road i would have given up and i wonder how many good ideas were given up because people are so ridiculed when they are not making a lot of money.

Yes. Business (small for sure) do take time to become sustainable business. It does not happen over night. Entrepreneurs lead the way in creating these opportunities and take on great risk – but the potential outcome with worth it.
