Become an Expert

Most people want to be known as experts in their fields because they think that it will increase their visiblity and sales. According to the Wall Street Journal, establishing yourself as an expert serves another very important purpose: it causes you to become more knowledgeable about other aspects of your niche. In other words, it causes you to actually become an expert in your field.

While working as a shoe and accessories designer, Shayna Kulik of New York worked with a series of freelance art directors who inspired her to launch her own design studio, Pixel Rumor.

In order to generate buzz for her new business, Ms. Kulik, 29 years old, looked for ways to establish herself as an expert in the frequently neglected area of pattern design. “I started a Web site that focuses on emerging trends in pattern design and includes interviews from my favorite pattern designers, art directors and trend forecasters around the world,” she says.

Ms. Kulik’s PatternPulp.com evolved into a resource for artists and creative executives, and her recognition grew with the site. “I started getting asked to do speaking engagements and received some terrific consulting opportunities, including being asked to design iTunes gift-card patterns,” she says.
