For Entrepreneur, It’s All In The Cards
In 2004, the poker craze was at its peak. “You could not go into Walgreens without seeing poker chips everywhere.”
Despite the proliferation of poker games at home, Steve Roelle also noticed a lack of poker decor, and began to formulate a plan for a new business, reports The Courier Press.
In the beginning, Roelle designed all the signs, built the Web site, and learned everything “by doing.”
Now a well-established brand, Roelle’s company has been featured in Poker Pro and other magazines, and he continues to sell poker decor all over the world.
“Poker started my learning curve,” said Roelle. “What I learned, in my basement at night, was how to take a product from design to manufacturing to sale.”
Change in online gaming laws and the poor economy made poker less popular, said Roelle. As the poker curve rounded the top, Roelle took his knowledge and developed another site.
The Perfect Sign offers hand-painted wooden signs for cooking, sports and other activities. Thousands of signs are available for every need.
“The Perfect Sign blew past the poker business right away,” said Roelle. “I learned that people were interested in high quality, painted wooden signs, and especially those that are 100 percent made in America.”

I love this story! It proves that it’s not the great idea that is important. It is getting started. Often the original idea is improved and honed to the point it does not even look like the final concept.
As Yogi Berra is credited with saying, “When you get to a fork in the road, take it.”
