Mom’s Quest Turns Into Multimillion-Dollar Biz

Kim Ormsby was supposed to be a corporate executive or a veterinarian.

What she was not supposed to be was the inventor of a new kind of cloth diaper that has catapulted the growing industry forward or the founder of a natural-infant-care company that has grown explosively each year since she started it in her Bozeman home in 2003.

The Billings Gazette reports that kind of success, said Ormsby — the Small Business Administration’s Montana 2010 Small Business Person of the Year — has come as a great surprise.

Since it was introduced in 2009, Ormsby’s GroVia cloth diaper design has changed the world of cloth diapering, selling about 4,000 diapers a month worldwide and emerging as one of the top-selling cloth diapers in the global market. The success has propelled her family-owned company into a multimillion-dollar business.

The diapers have everything you’d expect from a company that has “natural baby” right in the name: they’re organic and require less laundering, less soap and less water than other cloth diapers. The disposable line is compostable and made from natural, unbleached materials. They’re latex-free and pass Europe’s most stringent standards for healthy and green.
