Making DVDs Out Of Old VHS Or Slides

PatriotLedger.com:

Janet Gilmore launched VideoKin in January 2009. Her firm, which she runs out of her house, takes old VHS tapes, slides, and photos and uploads them into DVD format and video montages.

Gilmore graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a major in film and later worked at Boston-based Pieces Production and PBS Kids editing “Postcards from Buster,” a short film highlighting a character from the children’s show “Arthur.”

Gilmore is also working with the JFK Library in Boston to archive old footage of President John F. Kennedy in honor of the 50-year anniversary of Kennedy’s inauguration.

VideoKin charges customers $30 for the initial hour of work and $10 for each hour afterwards. Customers get a DVD with their purchase, and can purchase additional copies for $15. For video montages, Gilmore creates her own mash-up of different songs to fit each individual album she makes. She uses only snippets of songs to avoid copyright issues.

“I think what makes my process different from going to a shop that has video transfer is that when you drop off a box of tapes to another shop they will usually put your cassette in, press a button and copy your material exactly the way you gave it to them,” Gilmore said. “I put my material through (a computer editing program), and then I go in and edit it.”
