Toolbox Helps Small Biz Owners Boost Online Presence

The Daily News states that logging on to Make My Cake can be very dangerous.

One look at the photos on this Web site – cupcakes dripping in buttercream frosting and fluffy cheesecake topped with cream cheese frosting swirls – could make you drop everything and rush off to one of two Make My Cake bakeries in Harlem.

And that would be just fine with Aliyyah Baylor, co-owner of Make My Cake, who knows the value of a well designed Web site and wants to share her insight with other small business owners.

Baylor is one of nine entrepreneurs showcased on Tools for Online Success, a new online partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration and Google that provides free education and advice on how small businesses can use the Internet to grow.

The site, Google.com/help/sba, is a starting point for entrepreneurs who may be intimidated by the complexities of the Internet or believe using it to lure new customers would be too costly.

Baylor, who runs her 15-year-old firm with her mom, Jo-Ann Baylor, decided to revamp her Web site to better showcase her products as she prepares to launch a mail-order business next month.

She hired a consultant last year to scope out a Web designer and a photographer experienced in producing images for the Web for bakeries, investing $11,000. The payoff: the audience for the newly revamped site has doubled.
