Bizop: Digital License Plates

California, in its desperate search for revenue, might be the first state in the nation to sell advertising on license plates.
In legislation authored by Senator Curren Price, the DMV has been authorized to partner with innovation companies for the purpose of researching, developing, and implementing new technology at no additional costs to the DMV or State.
The device would look like a standard license plate when the car was moving, but when sensors detect that the vehicle has been stopped for more than four seconds, it would display digital advertising. The plates could also display Amber Alerts or traffic information.

The real questions is, would everyone be required to have one of these license plates that use advertising or would people be allowed to opt out? Also, if they did implement an opt out option, would it cost the driver extra just because they don’t want to be a moving ad board?
It’s an interesting idea and while it would bring in money for the state I don’t really think too many drivers would like the idea of being a rolling advertisement for some company whenever their car stops moving. Now maybe if they offered some sort of incentive to use the plate… that would be interesting!
