What Is It?
Yesterday we presented a photograph of a gold medal winning product design at the 2010 International Design Excellence Awards. But we couldn’t figure out what it was. It looked like a flower vase or a wine caraf and was called OneDown.
Just one reader, Sharon B. guessed that OneDown is a humane rat trap. (I think she Googled it ;-) ) The trap rests precariously in a horizontal position on a circular foot. Bait inside would lure the rat into the trap, a metal insert in the base coupled with the weight of the rat will tip the trap and bring it to a vertical position indicating that a rat has been trapped. Then the rat can be released instead of killed. It’s from the DSK ISD International School of Design in India where rats are a major problem.

I want a couple. I hate traditional traps, not to mention they’re not necessarily safe around kids. I love the idea of humane traps but have yet to find one that works and at a reasonable cost. I like the interesting design of this one, though!
