Veggie Annie’s Recipe For Success

For organic caterer Annie Marshall, what was originally a means to support her daughter has since become a dedication to teaching people the benefits of healthier eating reports FrederickNewsPost.com.

Marshall, who works under the name Veggie Annie, learned about cooking from her mother. She became a single mom at 25 and started a catering business to support her 2-year-old daughter Juliana, who is now 19.

“I had to make a living and I wanted to keep her with me,” she said. “She was so young and I was just starting out. We kind of grew up together.”

So when Marshall decided to start a nonprofit branch of her Veggie Annie business called Grandmothers Kitchen, she knew who she wanted to help: struggling single moms.

“The goal is to teach people what grandmothers knew about cooking,” she said. “My target audience was originally young moms on food stamps, because I was one.”

With produce donated from local farmers, Marshall teaches both men and women how to make the most of fresh food. She holds sessions in her own home, passing on lessons such as how to can and freeze seasonal foods. The services are free and the program runs for a year.

She said she hopes to foster the sense of family she closely associates with cooking, which was a staple of Juliana’s childhood.
