“Dazer” Keeps Dogs At Bay

Richard Wylie has created a device that will help keep a dog at bay if it tries to attack reports The Evening Telegraph. Known as the Dazer, his device emits a sound that cannot be heard by humans but can still be heard by dogs. The sound is apparently so annoying that it makes dogs want to get away from it.
Over the next year Richard hopes to sell 50,000 of the devices – netting him a cool £1.5 million.
They have even been trialled by the Royal Mail to deter dogs and the Kolmarden Zoo in Sweden to calm monkeys.
Richard came up with the idea of animal deterrents after a lifetime of worrying about dog attacks after being bitten as a teenager.
He said: “I was very lucky to not be injured and it planted a seed at an early stage.
“I was running down the road and a dog came the other way. He bit through my trousers and even though I wasn’t badly injured it was obviously a big shock.
“Something like that sticks with you. I made the first Dazer a few years ago but this new device has got state-of-the art technology and it really has a calming effect on the animals.”

In my opinion, this article contradicts itself. Is it annoying or calming? Those are two very different responses. I can’t personally imagine a dog being calmed at the push of a button. A sonic boom (to their ears) that makes them stop in their tracks and want to get away from you as quickly as possible sounds more effective. Fight or flight.

After typing my post above, I went to the Evening Telegraph website to read their article. The Zoo is endorsing and using this product, while the Royal Mail carriers will not. Sounds like there could be room for improvement, or a different concept altogether. The comments for their article were interesting, including making an angry dog angrier.

Good catch Donna. I was originally referring to the part that states, “The device emits an ultrasonic blast that is inaudible to humans but makes animals so uncomfortable they want to move out of its range – acting as a perfect defence if they become aggressive.” Obviously it cannot do both so it begs the question: Does it irritate or calm them?
