Buildings Shaped Like What They Sell

Longaberger is known for its handcrafted maple baskets, so its headquarters are obviously shaped like a giant basket. Not just any old basket, though. It’s a Longaberger Medium Market Basket that’s been blown up to 160 times its normal size.
This one’s a Boston institution. In 1933, Arthur Gagnon wanted to open an ice cream stand in nearby Taunton, and he designed his new business to look like a giant milk bottle.

United sells and rents heavy equipment like compactors and excavators, so it’s only natural that the company’s headquarters building is shaped like a two-story yellow bulldozer.

Between 1983 and the mid-1990s, Twistee Treat opened 90 or so ice cream shops around the country, and each one is shaped like a delicious cone of soft-serve vanilla.

Crazy as it sounds, this is a great idea. Helps distinguish the business and it becomes a landmark.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen a cone-shaped building that sells ice cream, but those other buildings are simply amazing. The giant basket is probably my favorite. I could not imagine how much it would have cost to build a building like that!

They are so kitschy, and if I remember correctly I think there’s even a book about these types of buildings. Hey, wouldn’t that make a superb summer vacation: pack up the family and travel around the US, visiting these unique roadside buildings shaped like one item or another. Since they are becoming rarer, what an terrific idea for a memorable Americana themed road trip; kids surely would go nuts for them!!
