Business in a Shipping Container Shut Down
Thinking about starting a business in a shipping container? If you’re operating in Oregon, make sure you get the proper permits or the city will shut you down. Oregon Live has more on one such entrepreneur:
For a couple of months, Vancouver has been home to a bicycle shop operating in some unconventional digs: a shipping container parked off Main Street.
Syncline Cycles owner Jerid James Lewton envisioned a bike shop that operated without the costs associated with a traditional storefront — heat and utilities, for example — and that was environmentally friendly. A shipping container seemed an elegant solution.
But that took the shop across the city’s permitting regulations. On Monday, Vancouver inspectors shut down the shop because it didn’t have proper permits.

And fair enough too
Whilst I think we all applaud the thinking and spirit of this young businessman, the reality is that business permits are not “optional” they exist for a reason and not have have them seems either rather naive or dismissive of this young entrepreneur.
I hope that he is able to get his permits together and open the doors again soon

Being a former fire inspector I would say that there is a reason for the permit and zoning laws. It helps prevent shanty towns and helps maintain the area. I would say that there is a place for them in industrial areas that would allow a start up some cheap storage. I have also seen a You Store It type of operation where they poured a pad and set the containers side by side in a screened yard. They painted them all the same and instant storage yard. I also just saw one made into a coffee house in the boon docks and it looked cool.
Might be worth a article on the different uses of the storage containers!

What types of permitting were required?

That is too bad about him being shut down. I am guessing he did not do enough research into the requirements for his business? Either way, I hope he’s able to get everything sorted out and back up soon. It is definitely a unique approach!
