Inventor Is Building A Solid Foundation For Success
Thomas Stewart has been in the construction business for nearly 30 years, and it was during his time in the business that inspired him to build a unique device.
According to Charleston Daily Mail, he was in the middle of renovating historic homes when he was hit with inspiration. The manual effort put into doing the work was simply too much. Isn’t there an easier way to get it done? Thomas decided there had to be. He went to work and developed the Heritage Anchor Lift. His device has made it possible to do a four or five man anchor installation job with only one man and the machine.
He started with an engine lift, a hydraulic lift cylinder, a torque motor, a torque monitor and other off-the-shelf pieces of equipment. He modified the lift so it could rotate 360 degrees and pivot in all axes. He made sure his device could be disassembled so two people could carry it downstairs. He designed it for use in very tight spaces and made sure it could install one anchor after another with precision.
Stewart has named the device the Heritage Anchor Lift. He said it is the first major invention he’s come up with that can be used in his work. “I can install anchors all day by myself if I want to,” he said. Stewart knew that other contractors who install helical anchors also might see the value in such a laborsaving tool. He hired the law firm of Spilman Thomas & Battle and has a patent pending.

Well, as someone affiliated with contracting and building, I am all for inventions that help make the workload easier. But, those four guys who now (theoretically at least) are out of work because of the anchor lift device: why not train them to use it? I am a member of an organization that has for years, spearheaded restoration of properties in the New Orleans area, really gathering steam post Katrina. How about using that device down in NOLA? Thus, creating more jobs in the construction industry and along the Gulf Coast? THERE’S a great, community friendly use of a fine idea, Mr. Stewart!
