Ethics aside, I often wonder if such activities even save money. Your time has a value. Is she not just substituting money saved for time lost?

As long as you’re following the rules, yes. I am an avid user of coupons and discounts, but I am no where near as successful at it as she is. The trick is to have coupons that can be used on discounted products, and to find a store that doubles or triples coupons. Some of the almost-best coupons I have found would not allow someone to use it on an already discounted item. Most of the time, the item at full price with the coupon is not cheaper than an alternative brand. Unless I am loyal to that brand, the coupon will go unused. If there is a legal opportunity to save money using coupons, I see nothing wrong with doing it.
