Weathering The Storm

Franchise operators are adept at finding the silver lining that surrounds hard economic times, writes Melinda Ham.

Sydney Morning Herald:

Natural disasters and a flat property market don’t necessarily spell bad news for operators of franchises. In fact, for many, business is booming.

Franchises involved with home maintenance, asset enhancement and home wares are going full speed ahead, according to Jason Gehrke, an adjunct lecturer at Griffith University and the director of the Franchise Advisory Centre.

”With property prices flatlining and interest rates trending up, many people are thinking: ‘Gee whiz, instead of selling our house and buying a new property, let’s renovate or buy new home goods,”’ Gehrke says. ”Others are cleaning up and replacing stuff after the disasters. So it’s not doom and gloom for franchises in these sectors that are seeing reasonable sales and franchise growth.”

Hire A Hubby – with nearly 300 franchisees across Australia and 30 in Britain – is one franchisor in this sector that’s enjoying a boom, says the company’s national franchise manager, Manuel Spitiri. More.
