Niche: Dirty Shopping Cart Handles

A new study has found that 72% of shopping carts handles have fecal matter on them. As many as 50% of those carts also tested positive for E. coli bacteria. According to the lead researcher from the University of Arizona study, Charles Gerba, “That’s more than you find in a supermarket’s restroom.”
Don’t worry though, where there’s a need, some entrepreneur will fill it.
One such company is Eco CartSafe. They manufacture a self-contained, portable sanitizing system designed to clean grocery shopping carts via a conveyor system that can accommodate up to 150 carts per hour. Their system uses high pressure super hot water and some kind of “
bacteriostatic” spray to protect the carts from fungal, viral and bacterial growth for up to 60 days. They have a turnkey, mobile business opportunity available.
Another company is PureCart Systems. Their system is a push through device that washes carts one at a time as they are returned to the store. Their machine, which looks like an x-ray machine, sprays a fine mist of hydrogen peroxide over the entire surface of the cart.

That’s not a bad idea, but I am not sure how many stores would use the service. I noticed that some big box locations, like Walmart and Meijers, have sanitizing wipes that can be used to wipe the handle area down. Some of these stores may feel it is more cost effective to stick with the antibacterial wipes instead of switching to that kind of approach. I wish they could consider something like that, though. Considering all the nasty cans, sick kids, leaking packages of raw meat, etc. that have found their way into the basket, it would do a lot of good to do a full cart clean once in a while.

I have to agree with you Angela. In Washington State, every store that has carts has the little sanitizing wipe station located around the cart pick-up area. As a consumer, we are happy just to give the handle a good wipe and be off, not considering what is lurking inside the cart itself.

That’s a great idea. They need that at my grocery store. It’s always out of the sanitary wipes. Just an empty container that no one wants to replace.

This company actually has a solution to this problem. They just need the grocery store chains attention.

I went to Walmart today and got a shopping cart from h*ll. The instant I took a good look at what my husband was pushing, I thought of these two cart sanitizer companies. Please be successful with this endeavour!
