Is This The Cheapest House in the USA?

A bottle of soda or a house?

In a 2008 eBay battle-of-the-highest-bidder, 30-year-old Joanne Smith beat out eight other bids with her generous offer of $1.75. Back taxes were about $850 and she was responsible for yard cleanup costs. She told the local newspaper she hoped to sell it for a profit. Maybe we’ll see an eBay listing for $2 soon?

The Fiscal Times has a slideshow of eight cheapest homes in the nation.

The home in the photograph is in Saginaw, Michigan. In addition to the $1.75, she also had to pay $850 in back taxes. Photo via USA Today.

Smart move. Really what you’re buying here is the land. Its best to invest an additional $5000 and have the house demolished and removed. Than sit on the land (and pay the taxes) until the market comes back. Can be a great investment if you can afford to wait a few years.

Ouch, definitely looks like it should be condemned. I am not really that surprised to learn that it is in Michigan, though.

I agree, the land is really where the money is.
