Starting a Cleaning Business?
A reader wrote:
What do you think about starting a house cleaning business?
There’s something all-American about entrepreneurs who start from scratch. Cleaning — a person and some rags and soap — is the quintessential start-up business that doesn’t require much capital.
That’s not to say it’s easy.
- You must deal with a range of clients and their particular quirks.
- You have to pay attention to more-efficient cleaning techniques, or your profits will go down the drain with the shower cleaner.
- Once you hire employees, you must have the fortitude to deal with ceaseless turnover.
Give it a go, and let me know how you make out.

Starting a cleaning business is pretty much a low cost opportunity, but like you mentioned it is not easy. I was recently hired by a friend to just pack her house, so she could move to her new place. I may even pick up a little extra work cleaning for her on occasion. During the packing process, I realized just how much work can go into making everything “right.” People forget just how time consuming it can be to clean a home. You also have to follow someone else’s rules while doing it. Unless you really love to clean, it can be a tough business to get into.

I have had a small cleaning business for years. It is hard work but it pays well and is also very rewarding. I choose to help those who have lost their spouse and are unable to do things by themselves. They also appreciate the companionship. If you like to clean and organize this may be just what you are looking for.

As a building superintendent I am often asked to clean apartments. People wanting to get into this type of business might also target special needs customers: I clean twice a week for a senior who is mildly disabled and autistic, and his family know and trust me. He is very glad to have me there and for us both, it is a social event as well as a housekeeping visit. And, I also have a lady with heart trouble, who gets out of breath easily and thus, cannot really do anything too vigorous. I clean her house and, she makes tea while I see to the various tasks. Being someone’s ‘cleaning lady” can be remunerative…and heartwarming!
