Australia Reaching Out To Small Biz Women
The thousands of women who run companies in Australia are being asked to speak out in a national research project dedicated to them.
The Women in Business Poll, to be launched tomorrow, will gather information on women in leadership and management roles.
The Australian Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AWCCI) says the research will shine a light on the challenges, rewards and opportunities for women running businesses in regional and metropolitan Australia.
“While significant information is available on women in leadership and management roles, there is very little data on the hundreds of thousands of women running small to medium-sized business in Australia,” AWCCI CEO Yolanda Vega said.
“It will explore such issues as how and why women start businesses, in what industries, where the businesses operate, revenue and wages, procurement of contracts, superannuation, childcare issues and more,” Ms Vega said.

Many women start their companies when they leave work for maternity. In many ways, this is a perfect moment to set up a new business because women have the extra time and often feel that they lack professional meaning in their lives. Also, the businesses do not have to bring profits in the first year, so many women can actually go through the difficult period of a startup having low sales levels. Governments need to realize that maternity leave is a time to support these women and should provide tools and tax benefits for new business formation.
