The Challenges Women Face In Business
Everyone faces unique challenges in business. Many women share common problems. Florida Today has looked at some of the issues women face in day-to-day business. What are some of the issues you face?
Integrating business and family.
Many women feel they need to do it all and balance both. This can lead to the inner turmoil of trying to make the best of both worlds, and that can end up in disaster. The best way to handle this challenge is to accept the fact that a “balance” is almost impossible to achieve.
Being taken seriously as business owners.
Just because they are not hiring 10 people right out of the gate does not dismiss them as serious businesswomen. Yet many don’t take them seriously as business owners. Some start their companies from their own living rooms and turn them into multi-million dollar companies.
Isolation.
Because of the challenge of integrating business and family, women have a tendency to work in isolation. … To overcome this challenge, women need to build that network of support.

And let me say that a mentor can be a treasure at a time like this. I had two, both wise older women who knew what it was to face bias, exclusion, patronizing attitudes, etc. And I learned so much from these wonderful sisters, who assured me that brains, faith and persistence would, in the end win the day. So, let’s all help one another, share our wisdom, our contacts, and tell our stories. “And, look how much I’ve gained. If I have to, I can face anything, I am strong, I am woman.” (remember the Helen Reddy song?)

I developed a Women’s Peer-to-Peer Mentoring group over six years ago and it is still going. Women within the group act as a board of advisors for each of the participating members, sharing knowledge and experience while helping one another to succeed. The small group of women, made up of non-competing peers from a variety of industries, meet regularly to bounce ideas off one another and share concerns confidentially. The women love having this type of outlet.

I was fortunate to be raised by my father, an international entrepreneur. He taught me to take risks and “go for it” and I think this has been the secret to my success (besides having a good business plan). Many of the female business owners I have mentored have been unwilling to invest in themselves and their business, leaving money and opportunities on the table.

I beg to differ with the statement that “a “balance” is almost impossible to achieve”. Everyone’s idea and definitio of balance is different – but that’s what makes it posible to achieve! If a person feels they need to live up to some cookie cutter idea or someone elses idea of what blance is – then no, it probably wouldn’t work. But since each of us is so different and our own definition of work / life balance is different – the possibility of getting it is high – specifically because we difine what that is.
