Eliminating The Foot Clutch
The electric transmissions has seen quite a few innovations, but manual has not been that lucky. However, John Otto hopes to change that with the synchro-clutch.
His new design eliminates the need for a foot clutch, making shifting less complicated compared to traditional manual transmissions. The clutch also shifts gears without resorting to actuators and computers used in automatic gearboxes.
While listening to a friend griping about the coordination required and hassle of shifting a manual transmission in traffic, Otto had an epiphany.
“I ran to my dorm room and read all that I could about manual transmissions and how they work until I had it all figured out. From there, I decided to make them easier to use,” Otto said.
When compared to automatic transmissions, manual offers a lot of pros, including the feeling of control and enjoyment that one gets from choosing when and where to shift their engine on the road.
According to Otto, manual transmissions are “more reliable, they’re less expensive and they generally get better gas mileage and keep the driver more engaged in the driving process.
