eBay has developed an iPad application that works with TV-guide data to show relevant merchandise from the television show currently being watched. For now, the user has to the tell the app what show the user is watching, but in the future, they hope that the app will automatically synchronize with the television.

This is all part of eBay’s new new “Couch Commerce” strategy. Users will be able to open up the eBay iPad app and select their zip code, cable provider and the current channel they’re watching. The site will then being suggesting products synced with the content on the screen.

It’s uses are pretty amazing, if you’re like most people and notice the products in the background of your favorite sitcom and wonder where you can buy them.

Business Week has more:

“See his jersey?” the EBay Inc. executive said, pointing to a TV that almost covers a wall of his office. As he talks, the uniform pops up on a tablet computer in front of him, along with vintage sportswear and tickets to upcoming games — all available for purchase.

The software is central to EBay’s campaign to help consumers buy the things they see on television — a concept known as TV commerce. Starting today, the company will offer the features as part of its iPad application, letting users browse merchandise from shows and movies. EBay aims to leverage its role as the largest online marketplace, with 200 million listings and 58 million mobile users.
