The readymade convenience that franchises bring need not come at horrible cost. You can snap up a potential bargain for well under $100,000 if you browse the Australian franchise opportunities advertised online by a range of organisations.

Franchise consultant Richard McDonnell spotlights the garden maintenance franchise, Jim’s Mowing, which offers some franchises for well under $50,000. A Jim’s Mowing franchise represents good value “for a certain type of person” happy to mow all day every day, McDonnell says. Often retrenched, the merry mowers are also “highly ambitious”, according to McDonnell.

Whatever your degree of commitment, think hard about return on investment (ROI). If you fork out $60,000 for a franchise, you will want to make more than $40,000 a year, he says.
