De Dutch Expands Into Alberta

Vancouver Sun:

B.C.’s iconic pancake house is expanding – again – into Alberta.

Surrey-based De Dutch Pannekoek House Restaurants Inc. plans to open a new franchised restaurant in Edmonton this summer, a move that could not only be the first of many in that province, but follows new openings over the past year in B.C.

Although two Calgary De Dutch restaurants closed in recent years and the company’s profits are down, president Bill Waring is optimistic about returning to Alberta where the new Edmonton restaurant would be the chain’s only one outside of B.C.

“I think the Alberta market is one of the strongest markets in the country, particularly Edmonton,” Waring said Tuesday of a restaurant chain that was founded by John Dys in 1975 and gradually expanded throughout Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and the Cariboo.
