Homeless Hotspots

NY Times: “With a project called Homeless Hotspots, a marketing company is helping out with this, while helping the homeless and promoting itself. Homeless people have been enlisted to roam the streets wearing T-shirts that say “I am a 4G hotspot.” Passersby can pay what they wish to get online via the 4G-to-Wi-Fi device that the person is carrying.”

According the advertising company that came up with the idea, Homeless Hotspots attempts to modernize street newspaper for the digital age.

What a great idea for people to help themselves, awesome. http://www.facebook.com/SoshymanSM

The jury’s still out on this in Gotham. It has sparked some really intense exchanges. Some NY’ers think it’s dehumanizing the homeless (as if they weren’t dehumanized enough already), while others maintain that it’s great people now ‘seek them out.” I can only speak for myself and… frankly, something about the whole idea makes me uneasy.

I think this is probably a violation of cell carrier TOS. It is certainly a violation to sell a hotspot on a consumer account. Making it a donation may sidestep that, I dunno.
Anyhow, success would bring scrutiny and it may not pass muster.

Gross. A health hazard that objectifies the homeless. Like they need anymore shit dumped on them by society. SCREW WHOSEVER IDEA THIS IS – you’ve obviously NEVER been there, have little regard for human life and are only out to make a buck off the backs of the least regarded members of society.

    Disgusting, not innovative.
