The huge employment shakeout of the past five years, with over 250,000 job losses, has forced many people to look at self-employment opportunities. However, in the current environment, with demand depressed and the banks reluctant to lend, striking out on one’s own can be a truly terrifying prospect.

For many people, franchising represents a half-way house. They get to run their own business while having an established brand and the support of a wider network.
