Skating On Carpet

By on September 27, 2012 in Inventions

For Don Edwards, it began with a need to move furniture on carpet with ease. In 1993, he designed a product called EZ Moves Furniture Slides. When placed under the edges of a couch or chair, it could move around a carpeted room with ease. What came next he never expected, reports Your Norwin.

Edwards created Fun Slides carpet skates after some of his employees were playing around at a trade show.

“They were acting goofy and sliding across the floor with them on their feet, or they would push with them underneath their hands and knees,” Edwards said.

After the trade show, Edwards went back to his workshop and attached foot straps to a pair of his furniture slides and created the skates.

He debuted the skates at New York City’s annual International Toy Fair, where he says his skates were a hit.

Another Idea: How to Start a Trade Show Business

A friend of ours was traveling in Europe, Germany I think, and they were touring some great historic castle/manor house. They had arrived a bit early; the doors to one of the a main rooms was slightly ajar, but closed to the public. When they peeked in, they saw about six young men, with what looked like big dustrags strapped to their feet, ‘skating’ and applying floor wax to the wooden floor in the room, which must have been the size of a gymnasium. His first thought: wow what fun. Second: what a great idea for a product!! Howzabout, along the line of this Carpet Skate concept – one for polishing floors? Call it WaxSkatz, or something? He said it was a hoot and, being a savvy businessman himself – wondered why nobody had ever picked up on this delightful marriage of a chore, to fun!
