Chickens Are Hot in a Recession

Back in the early ’80s, when the nation was gripped by recession, Duane Schiedler and his wife, Julie, retooled their cabinet shop to churn out geodesic-dome greenhouses.

Fast forward more than two decades and the Schiedlers are at it again, only this time they’ve expanded. In addition to compact greenhouses (they’ve ditched the dome design), the couple also are building and selling compost bins, raised planting bed systems and custom chicken coops they like to refer to as “victory coops,” a play on the victory gardens promoted during World War II to ease food rationing.

What started as a sideline business last fall has since become a full-fledged business.

    Chickens are definitely the thing to have, if you have the time to put into caring for/raising them. :-) As an added bonus, once you have them you can save on the cost of eggs!

    I’ve wanted chickens for a while, my old neighbors used to have some, I just haven’t had the opportunity.

    Raising chickens is definitely rewarding in many ways. But unless you do it on a large scale. I can almost guarantee that you will be spending more money raising them then you will saving by not buying grocery store eggs. Feeding your chickens will most likely cost you several times over the price of just buying eggs. However there are tons of other benefits. I hope every one gives it a try at least once.

    Chickens are a great thing to obtain. I know quite a few people who own many chickens. They are cheap to buy, and pretty much cheap to take care of, and not only give you eggs by the dozens (which is a rising cost these days) but they give you enough chicken to where you never have to buy chicken (which unless it’s on a great sale…is a very HUGE price in the pocket book at grocery time).
