The Hygiene Handle is covered in 23 pressure points that release a sterile gel when it is pulled to open the door.
Inventor Matt Roberts, 31, said the idea has been trialled at two hospitals and he is hoping the invention will be rolled out nationally by the NHS.
The father-of-one, said: ‘I came up with the idea when I had been going to the hospital as a visitor.
‘I had a lot of time to observe people and saw not many would use the gel dispensing machine mounted on the walls.
‘There are a lot of posters telling you about different things, and I don’t think people really pay attention to it all.’
Trials for the Hygiene handle revealed it made people seven times more likely to sanitise their hands.
