A few years ago, Greg Hankerson was an investment banker in Phoenix with a problem.

No, not a problem at work. A problem at home.

His wife wanted a patio, and Hankerson was too cheap to buy her one.

This need eventually drove Hankerson out of the world of high finance and into business manufacturing custom industrial-style furniture for his company Vintage Industrial Furniture Design.

Funny, what began with a five minute welding and fabrication lesson from a friend has turned into a full time affair making furniture out of old machinery that he sells around the world.

It’s amazing what someone can do with a little bit of information and some scraps. I love it when I hear about businesses like this. Its pretty much accidental, but a complete success.
