WACO, Texas (November 12, 2012) – On the one-year anniversary of the launch of Operation Enduring Opportunity, home-service franchisor The Dwyer Group is proud to recognize the accomplishments of more than 4,300 U.S. military veterans who have opened a franchise since November 11, 2011, including 33 who have been selected as owners for one of The Dwyer Group’s seven service brands.
Last Veterans Day, The Dwyer Group joined First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington D.C. to launch Operation Enduring Opportunity, a strategic initiative of the International Franchise Association (IFA) to hire or recruit as franchise owners 75,000 military veterans and spouses and 5,000 wounded warriors by 2014. In a progress report released on November 8, 2012, the IFA reported that 64,880 veterans have found employment in franchising since the 2011 launch, including 4,314 as owners.
Thirty-three military veterans, ranging in location from Anchorage, Alaska, to Hartford, Conn., chose to open a franchise in the past year under a franchise concept owned by one of The Dwyer Group companies. Three wounded warriors, a Bronze-Star medalist, and two husband-wife veteran teams are among this high-achieving group.
“These veterans vary by rank, military branch, and background, but they all share the same entrepreneurial drive to provide a good life for their families, create jobs, and to treat customers with respect and integrity,” commented Dina Dwyer Owens, CEO and Chairwoman of The Dwyer Group.
In addition to awarding franchises to veterans at a 25% discount off the minimal initial franchise fee, The Dwyer Group actively encourages franchises of its subsidiaries companies to hire veterans. A recent internal survey found that 28% of the 1,600 independently owned franchisees operating a brand owned by The Dwyer Group companies had hired a military veteran since November 11, 2011.
The late Don Dwyer Sr., founder of The Dwyer Group, initiated the VetFran program out of a desire to thank returning Gulf War veterans by offering them the best financial incentive towards owning a franchise. Today, The Dwyer Group has awarded more than $1.4 million to veterans, and the program has grown to include 530 franchise systems.
