Nostalgia Is A Profitable Market

Columbus Dispatch:

Two area dealers of antique and vintage good say business is good these days despite the nation’s sluggish economy and jitters about jobs.

Janet Phillips opened Feathers, an antique store in the Oregon District, in 1978. Her inspiration for opening the business came from her love for old movies and fashion from the 1920s.

Dick Butler co-owns Grandpa’s Garage, a Springfield store that sells vintage transportation-related items, with his wife Linda Butler. Both Butler and his wife had an interest in cars growing up.

Phillips and Butler are part of a $4 billion industry that includes more than 55,000 stores nationwide, according to HighBeam Business Research. There are 34 antique dealers in the Dayton area according to The Internet Antiques Guide, a comprehensive directory of dealers across the country.

Phillips said she has not seen much of a decrease in interest for antiques.
