Niche Biz: Knives

Twenty-four-year-old Nachiappan Ramanathan has an ideal set of interests — he collects knives and he carves. The best part about pursuing a hobby like his is that everywhere he travels, the hobby follows.

“I was eight-years-old when I got my first knife, which had a spoon, fork and knife on it. My father used to collect fancy knives with intricate details and I was always fascinated with them,” says Nachiappan, who is always on the lookout for local knives.

He used to carry that one knife around everywhere he went and two years after that, was presented with his first Swiss army knife. During an English class, he started carving a piece of chalk and soon, the complementing hobbies started to take over.

“My collection grew and so did my fascination for it. I loved going to the pottery and woodcraft section and making things. I picked up carving on my own,” he explains. He even has a box containing all the carvings he has made since school.
