Broadband or Leased Lines

Cable Wires

Working out what is best for your business is very difficult and time consuming. There are many different ways of getting internet for your business but some are better and more cost effective than others.

In the article below, Fluidata explains the pros and cons of leased lines and broadband for business.

Broadband

A broadband service is high-speed internet that is constantly on and tend to be a fixed cost wherever you are in the UK. The services are shared with others in the area using the internet and means you can have access to high quality services for example gaming, streaming or interactive services. A lot of business’ need to be able to share and transfer lots of data using the internet, so broadband enables this. Unlike dial – up, broadband does not block phone lines and is constantly connected.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL works by using unused telephone wires and this causes no interruption to your telephone service. Although the further you are away from the switching station, the less connection you will get.

Cable

Cable internet is provided by your local TV provider. The speed of this connection is dependent on how many other people are using the service at the same time which means slow periods usually occur at peak times for example, in the evenings.

Fiber-Optic

Fiber-optic is the newest broadband on the market and has the fastest connection at the moment. The downfall of fiber-optic broadband is that it is still very new and service areas are limited because they are still laying down the cables. The cost of this competes with DSL and cable but is much, much faster.

Satellite

The slowest broadband service provided is by satellite and the installation costs are high but monthly costs are competitive to DSL and cable.

Leased Line

When you have a leased line you can feel a lot safer and at ease as it means that the internet is all yours; you are not sharing with anyone. The product is ideal for any business that needs high speed internet that has the ability to be used by many different people at the same time. You can use the line for onsite hosting of web content and it has reduced latency. This line is also constantly on and has fixed bandwidth connectivity between two points which transport data, voice traffic or internet.

When using a leased line you can set up your own security so that people can’t get on the line. You can get security measures, for example firewall and VPN, to ensure that your line is safe. Firewall prevents threats from hackers and viruses. VPN (Virtual Private Networking) means that businesses can communicate with other offices as if they were sitting right next to them.

Overall if you are in a big business, a leased line would be better for you. It means you don’t need to share, it is all yours and all of your information is safe within your internet line. As a small business it may not be as cost effective to use a leased line and broadband should be enough.
