He launched WOW 1 DAY PAINTING with a promise to deliver quality work by skilled painters and a top-notch customer experience, all in one day.
We recently spoke with Scudamore, who is also the CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, to find out the secrets to his success, what motivates him along the way, and lastly, what advice he has for aspiring entrepreneurs.
What’s special about the franchise?
The compulsion for consumers to have instant gratification is forcing businesses, both online and off, down a path of re-invention. In traditional service industries, such as painting, staying apace with the realities of such an advanced technological environment can be difficult.

What is the idea behind the franchise?
I needed my home painted, and a few companies came to give me an estimate. The third one really stood out: they cost the same but offered to do it in a day. I left in the morning and came home to a freshly painted home that night.
At that moment, I realized that the simple formula “Speed + Quality = WOW” can turn an ordinary service like painting into an exceptional experience. With professional efficient painters and a fresh, vibrant brand, WOW 1 DAY PAINTING was born.

Where do you see the franchise in five years?
We’re going to continue disrupting the painting industry with professional painters and exceptional customer service. In five years, we’re aiming for 200 franchise partners serving every major metro in North America.
Tell us more about yourself.
I created 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in 1989 with a vision of providing exceptional service in an industry that hadn’t seen it before. Now, it’s the world’s largest junk removal company. The systems I built with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? are the foundation to WOW 1 DAY PAINTING: I knew that to stand out in a mundane industry like painting, the company would have to have an engaging brand and offer outstanding professionalism that would change the field.
Now, there are three brands under one company, O2E Brands. It stands for “ordinary to exceptional,” which describes the feeling of each of my home-service brands, whether it’s with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, or my moving company, You Move Me.
Can you describe a typical day in the life of a franchisee?
Running the business, which includes keeping up on the books, supervising staff and doing estimates, will keep you busy — this is definitely a full-time job. Doing an estimate involves speaking at length with the client about their needs and timeline. It also means a few walkthroughs to ensure the painters are well acquainted with the space before starting the project.
Between estimates, there are marketing activities, like posting lawn signs and door knockers, and it’s always wise to build relationships in the community with relevant players, like realtors. Day-to-day life of a franchisee is never the same, but that’s what makes it so exciting.
What’s your background?
In 1989, I founded 1-800-GOT-JUNK? with an old pick-up truck and only $700. Twenty-five years ago, I realized that focusing on professionalism and customer service was unexpected in the junk industry. Continuing to provide exceptional service grew 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to be the biggest junk removal service in the world, and now we have a franchise in every major metro in North America.
The systems I created with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? were really the foundation for the infrastructure of WOW 1 DAY PAINTING.
What motivates you to keep going?
Knowing that if we keep imagining big possibilities for our people, brands and ideas we can make them happen. It’s about people who start in an ordinary position and move to an exceptional one in their own life.
If you were to start again, what would you do differently?
Nothing. I had to make mistakes along the way. Learning from those mistakes has been key — you don’t grow without making mistakes. We actually have a room at our headquarters called “WTF”, which stands for “Willing to Fail.” We want to inspire people to make mistakes and learn from them.
Please tell us your secret to success…
It’s all about people. It’s also about challenging the status quo, and finding a different, better way. But it all comes down to the people and treating them right.
Any final words for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Dream a big picture in full color of what your compelling future looks like. Then reverse engineer from there. If you want rags to riches, start at riches and work back.
