Schooley Mitchell is the largest independent telecom and merchant services consulting company in North America. Their network of franchised consulting offices across the continent serves as the outsourced expense reduction specialists to business clients, providing professional solutions from coast-to-coast.
We recently interviewed Dennis Schooley, co-founder and CEO of Schooley Mitchell, to find out what makes the Schooley Mitchell franchise special, what he looks for in potential franchisees and where he sees the franchise headed in the next five years.
What’s special about your franchise?
First, there is an absolute need in the B2B marketplace because of the confusion in the telecommunication industry. Secondly, Schooley Mitchell is the largest independent telecom consulting company in North America with over 16,000 clients and 300 consultants. Schooley Mitchell has been in business since 1980.
What is the idea behind the franchise?
Schooley Mitchell helps businesses make the best decisions about their telecom services and products, as well as their credit card processing. Schooley Mitchell insures businesses get the right thing from the right vendor at the right price currently and for the future.
How does it compare to its competition?
Schooley Mitchell provides independent and objective advice to its clients and is completely independent of all telecom suppliers. Schooley Mitchell consultants work on a contingency basis so clients incur no expenses and make no investment unless savings are found.
What do you look for in a potential franchisee?
Our ideal candidate does not need to come from a telecom background. We find that candidates with strong business skills in management and sales who are motivated to own their own business can build a successful business.
Where do you see the franchise in five years?
The telecom industry will continue to evolve with new products and services and there will continue to be a need for a strong advocate in the marketplace to help and guide businesses with their telecommunication environment.
Can you describe a typical day in the life of a franchisee?
I hope they are in the field working on their business. Our business model will involve networking to build relationships in their community, making calls to both new and existing clients while efficiently managing their time.
What motivates you to keep going?
My sincere belief and passion that the business model works! I am most passionate about the success we have created for many of our franchisees.
If you were to start again, what would you do differently?
We made mistakes along the way but our core business is very strong so we will continue to enhance and build on that model.
Please tell us your secret to success…
I have a simple formula — show up every day, follow our proven methods and systems and you can achieve your goals.
What is the worst job you have ever had and what did you learn from it?
I would not say the worst job but my career as a Chartered Accountant gave me the business structure and ultimately the idea about telecom consulting business.
What is one thing that really excites you?
I am passionate about our business and I know it works especially when I see the success of many of our franchisees.
Any final words for aspiring entrepreneurs?
My thoughts are that if you aspire to business ownership be fully prepared to make a full time commitment. Franchising is a method that has proven success and the people are what drive that success.
