It is about that time of year again – orange and black in every store window, the fragrant aroma of cinnamon sticks and apple cider in the air, and a Halloween Store in every city – maybe more than one.

Have you ever wondered about these great big giant Halloween stores that pop up out of nowhere, last for 2 months and then close back up almost over night? Well we did a little research and discovered how they operate. While it may be too late for this year, you might want to think about opening one for next year.
The first Spirit Halloween Store opened in 1983 and we understand there are almost 700 locations in 48 states. They generally open around Labor Day weekend and close in early November – just a few days after Halloween.

So How Does It Work:

Many of their stores are consignment operations. This means that Spirit ships the merchandise to the stores and takes a percentage of the sales. Inventory that doesn’t sale is shipped back to Spirit at the end of the season. Spirit even pays for the return of the goods.

So what Do You Do:

The consignment operator (that would be you) negotiates the lease with the landlord, purchases all the fixtures and supplies and hires and pays the staff. You operate under the Spirit name and comply with their basic merchandising and marketing philosophies. Spirit supplies the operator with the best assortment of Halloween merchandise in the industry. Spirit even furnishes the operator with POS terminals in order to ring sales and replenish merchandise during the season.
The consignment operator controls his own expenses and pays only for what he sells.
