Beverage Shop Goes Global

San Diego Union-Tribune:

For Jeffery Adler, half the globe is fly-over territory. That’s because his company, Dlush Beverage Joint, operates out of only two markets: Southern California and the Middle East.

Adler, a Maryland native and graduate of Georgetown Law, started Dlush in San Diego with the idea of putting a “modern, progressive and emotionally relevant” spin on mixing drinks. He targeted the youth market with decadent concoctions, including caramel macchiatos, mango slushes and the signature “Sassy B,” a strawberry-banana shake.

The first Dlush opened in San Diego’s Fashion Valley mall in 2001. Stores in Otay Ranch and Hollywood followed in 2006.

Later that year, Dlush’s expansion took an unexpected turn. While vacationing in San Diego, Kuwaiti student Badder Alghanim visited Dlush. He then contacted his cousin Nasser Alghanim, who is a director with the Kuwait-based Alghanim Sons Group. The cousins wanted to bring Dlush to the Middle East.

“We thought it was something different,” Nasser Alghanim said. “It was new, it was young.”

Several months later, Adler received a letter from Alghanim Sons Group inviting him to discuss a partnership. Read full story.
