A New Introduction to Bibliography
Philip GaskellRonald B. McKerrow's An Introduction to Bibliography for Literary Students has been the classic manual on bibliography, showing how the transmission of texts might be affected by the processes of printing, but he concentrated almost exclusively on "Elizabethan" printing - the period from 1560 to 1660. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the textual problems of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and, although McKerrow covered the period up to 1800, he did not describe the technology of the machine-press period. Gaskell incorporates work done since McKerrow's day on the history of the printing technology of the hand-press period, and he breaks new ground by providing a general description of the printing practices of the machine-press period. Little has been previously published about the techniques and routines of nineteenth- and twentieth-century book production, making this book essential to students of literature, scholars, printing historians, librarians, and booklovers.

Naïve documents the return of classical graphic design reminiscent of the 1940s to 1960s in contemporarygraphic design. The naive is a childlikeness, where it is no longer expected. Friedrich vonSchillerA minimalist design vocabulary is currently being reinvented by a troop of younggraphic designers who are rediscovering the stylistic elements reminiscent ofclassic graphic design such as silkscreen printing, classical typography, handlettering, woodcutting and folk art and integrating them into their work. Naïvedocuments this extraordinary renaissance of Classic Modernism, from the 1940sto 1960s, in contemporary graphic design.Inspired by twentieth century American legends such as Saul Bass, the undisputedmaster of film title design and iconic logos as well as modernist graphic artistCharley Harper and textile designer Alexander Girard, these burgeoning designersare creating new and striking imagery using palettes of earthy and pastel shades, reduced strokes, patterns and shapes with a strong folkloristic element.Naïve illustrates this new development in graphic design, assembling a multitudeof vivid and inspiring examples ranging from illustrations, poster art, editorials, book covers and record sleeves to stationery and textiles.

The Boiler Room and Other Telephone Sales Scams
Robert J. StevensonSure to make you think twice before responding to the next telephone sales call you receive, this volume explores why telephone boiler rooms and other scams thrive and how fraudulent techniques and deception migrate to and from conventional businesses. "The Boiler Room and Other Telephone Sales Scams" is grounded in the nine years Robert Stevenson spent working covertly as a "participant-observer" in telephone rooms (the ethical implications of which he discusses in an epilogue). As Stevenson details boiler room hierarchy, you'll learn why all boilers are telephone salesmen but not all telephone salesmen are boilers. You'll read about the "heat" rising in rooms where experienced pitchmen use tried-and-true manipulative techniques to overcome objections to sales. And you'll marvel at Stevenson's insider knowledge of product houses, service shops, and other aspects of a major industry in which both employees and customers are in daily peril-the former of losing their jobs and the latter of losing their money. "The Boiler Room and Other Telephone Sales Scams" is required reading for anyone who's ever picked up a telephone and been asked to buy a product or a service. It's also an invaluable study of a widespread form of deviance and occupational crime, essential reading for students of criminology and the sociology of occupations.
Computer Systems Design and Architecture (2nd Edition)
Vincent P. Heuring and Harry F. Jordan The authors take a “No Mysteries” approach to computer systems. They interrelate three different viewpoints to provide a unique understanding of the subject: the perspective of the logic designer, the assembly language programmer, and the computer architect. The book has up-to-the-minute coverage of the latest developments in microprocessors, including ALU, pipelining, memory hierarchy, networks and the Internet. And, rather than focusing on a single type of architecture, Heuring and Jordan examine both CISC and RISC models at the ISA level using the unambiguous language of RTN (Register Transfer Notation), allowing for a more in-depth appreciation of different machine structures and functions. The authors examine general purpose machine, machine languages, and digital logic, some real machines, processor design, processor design—advanced topics, computer arithmetic and the arithmetic unit, memory system design, input and output, peripheral devices, communications, networking and the Internet. For computer science and engineering professionals.
