GERRY HARVEY is so enamoured with his overseas operations that he plans to attack the United Kingdom and Italian retail markets.

Mr Harvey told about 500 guests at an Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce lunch yesterday that while his passion remains horses, expanding his Harvey Norman retail empire was very important.

Mr Harvey said that, at 67, the last thing he wanted to do was to end up being a “boring bastard in a retirement home”.

“We have nine shops in Ireland and plan to expand further into Belfast then over to England and then to Italy,” Mr Harvey said.

He then repeated what he told shareholders at Tuesday’s annual meeting, saying: “Well, I just want to feel a bit happier in Ireland first … get a few more stores in Ireland, then go to Northern Ireland and Scotland first because England is big, big.

“You’ve got to go down a bit strong … you can’t just go down and open one shop,” he said.
