The Sylvan Learning centers in and Bentonville and Fayetteville, Ark., and Columbia and Jefferson City, Mo., closed on May 28, 2009, said Sylvan spokeswoman Jennifer Gaegler.
In a letter to 40/29 News, Gaegler wrote, “Sylvan Learning, Inc., the franchisor, is saddened by these closings. As a franchise organization, unfortunately, on occasion a franchisee operator determines that he or she is unable to continue operating his or her center.”
Parents who paid the Sylvan centers own by Stanley in advance for tutoring have some options, Gaegler said.
Families may elect to have their children receive their Sylvan reading and math programs online through Sylvan Online. Online programs through Sylvan Online work the same way that programs offered in Sylvan Learning Centers work, using individualized instruction and nearly identical educational programs. Each student works in real-time with an instructor through his or her home computer over the internet, while simultaneously communicating with his or her Sylvan teacher through a headset. Parents should contact Sylvan Online Virtual Learning Center at 1-800-514-1639 to determine whether Sylvan Online is appropriate for their children.
