There likely exists a franchise for almost every personality imaginable.

Whether it’s a part-time, easygoing gig or a nonstop, on-call grind, whether you’re the hands-on and get-dirty guy or the absentee owner who prefers to delegate, someone somewhere has built a model that works.

If you want to make a living developing amateur sports leagues, there’s a Florida-based franchisor called i9 Sports that wants you to call. If you like catching wild animals, Michigan-based Critter Control has a business plan waiting.

Maybe you just want to teach mathematics to children in your spare time. Rajani Karla had exactly that thought.

An immigrant from Hyderabad, India, Karla came to San Antonio 10 years ago with degrees in computer science and mathematics. She was a computer programmer at Randolph Air Force Base and enjoyed her job. But shortly after having a second child, she decided to leave the work force.

Karla soon tired of the stay-at-home-mom scene and searched the Internet for a business opportunity. Her search narrowed to tutoring centers. Karla used such a center for her daughter, now 8, but it only gave her worksheets; Karla wanted something that involved teaching.

“When I came across Mathnasium, I knew this was something for me,” Karla said. “It was part time, involved teaching math, and it was with kids.”

Based in Los Angeles, the Mathnasium franchise targets students from pre-K to 12th grade and offers one-on-one tutoring for all math levels up to precalculus. With a boutique-sized retail location near Bitters Road and U.S. 281, Karla’s business operates 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. Read more.
