El Pollo Loco To Roost In Downtown Santa Cruz In June

Santa Cruz Sentinel:

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of another Starbucks opening downtown have been greatly exaggerated. Instead, the new tenant next to Trader Joe’s and Woodstock’s Pizza is El Pollo Loco, a fast-food chain specializing in grilled chicken and Mexican food.

It will be the only outlet in the county for the 396-restaurant chain, but it’s No. 10 for Manuel Perales.

Perales, 37, of Concord, the franchisee, owns 9 El Pollo Loco restaurants from San Jose to Oakland and Salinas.

‘We wanted to fill in the gap,’ he said. ‘Santa Cruz meets the criteria.’

He signed a 15-year lease. He expects to open in June after an estimated $300,000 in improvements are completed by American Building Concept of Valley Springs, which has worked for him on other restaurants.

About 40 employees will be needed, half full time and half part time. Perales plans to start hiring in 2 weeks.
