Burger House, Wild About Harry’s Will Expand Franchising Despite Economy

Despite the chokehold on commercial credit, two Dallas restaurant companies have decided this is the time to make their first major push into franchising.

For franchisers, tough times can bring a surge in well-qualified franchisee applicants, as out-of-work executives look to create their own jobs.

But this downturn is marked by a dearth of credit, something needed to do most deals.

Still, Burger House, a family-owned chain launched here in 1951, and Wild About Harry’s, a hot dog/custard place on Knox Street, say they plan to expand through franchising.

And next week, Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc., based in Tampa, Fla., will arrive in Irving to seek franchisees to boost its Texas presence.

The three chains seem undaunted by economic conditions, though a Checkers official acknowledged that tight credit already has scotched some deals.

Experts warn that franchisers, especially new ones, will find it harder to complete deals as lenders raise the bar. Read more.
