Creating ‘Young Rembrandts’

When Bette Fetter created the Young Rembrandts program in 1988, she wasn’t thinking about creating a national program to teach art to young children. She was simply trying to teach a friend’s three children and several more from their neighborhood the fundamentals of basic drawing.

But her simple lesson has snowballed into a nationally franchised art program.

“I saw there were so many other programs but there weren’t any programs out there to teach you how to draw,” Fetter said. “We focus on drawing and more of the fine arts aspect.”

Fetter’s program has been rapidly expanding across the country and has been franchising locations since 2001. The program is even going global with upstarts in certain Asian markets.

It was that expansion that led Pam Olcese to find out about the program when one of the classes was brought to Chesterfield Township. Olcese enrolled her son, Mathew, in the program and realized how beneficial it could be to young artists. She was so impressed with the teacher, Dale King, she decided to look into bringing the Young Rembrandts program to her school, the Shining Stars Early Childhood Center in New Haven…
